Flying Meat Releases an Alternative to AppleScript in JSTalk

Gus Mueller, developer of VoodooPad and Acorn, has released a beta preview of a new Mac scripting tool based on JavaScript called JSTalk.

I think of AppleScript in the same way as the original Macintosh Toolbox and Carbon after it. AppleScript was good in its day, but the time has come for something new…I want a language with momentum and resources behind it. I want something easy to setup and debug, where I can peek under the covers when things goes wrong.

There are many who deride AppleScript as an unconventional, idiomatic language different enough from English as to be entirely frustrating to work with. As a non-programmer, however, AppleScript was the easiest route for me to start automating things on my Mac, and I’ve had some moderate successes with it. But Mueller’s project looks interesting and as he says, it may be time for something new.
