Tip for FastScripts Users: Store OS X’s Default Scripts in a Single Folder

fastscripts-icon.jpgFastScripts, a MacMembrane favorite, is an alternative to OS X’s menu bar script menu. As the name implies, it’s a fast way to launch AppleScripts using the mouse or by assigning them custom keyboard shortcuts.

A small annoyance with FastScripts, however, is the inability to remove the scripts that come preinstalled with OS X from the main script menu. Some of these scripts do helpful things, and moreover they are an excellent resource for snippets and general learning about AppleScript. Nevertheless, there isn’t a script there that I run with any regularity, and thus their massive presence in the FastScripts menu is a distraction.

This is an easy problem to fix! Simply create a new folder (possibly called “System Scripts”) at the same level as the multiple folders containing the default scripts and drag all the folders into it! It’s not an absolute fix, as this new folder will still show up in the FastScripts’ menu, but I do occasionally use these scripts and plunder them for ideas when writing, so I wouldn’t want them completely gone anyways.

A simple solution to a minor annoyance!
